Repairing AC units or any other appliances needs its specific tools. We have already talked about 11 most common tools for appliance repair. Here, we are going to introduce some tools and equipment needed for an AC unit service or repair.
Although, there is no need to have all the tools but using some appropriate ones can facilitate the AC repair operation.
Note: before starting any AC repair or any other repair operations, make sure to use all safety equipment like safety goggles or gloves
1.Reciprocating saw
The capability of this kind of saw to cut different kinds of materials has made it a valuable tool for almost all technicians in their repair operations especially AC repair. Reciprocating saw is most suitable for quick and efficient cuts.
Tip: each blade of the saw has its own specific usage. So, choose the blade according to the surface to be cut. Otherwise, it will get hurt or even broken.
Note: make sure the blade is sharp enough to have a neat cut.
2.Vacuum pump
A vacuum pump is a device that draws moisture and gas molecules from an AC unit during AC repair or service. It produces a negative pressure or a relative vacuum. This tool is usually used before refrigerant charge during AC repair or service.
3.Refrigerant pressure gauge
This device is an inseparable part of every AC repair or troubleshooting process. It is used in all refrigeration systems. The gauge is used to measure pressure in AC tubes; look for probable leaking; add, discharge or recharge the refrigerant.
4.Insulated screwdrivers
Every repairman should have a set of required screwdrivers for his repair job. The set should include different kinds of Philips, flat, Allen and Torx screwdrivers in different sizes to drive different screws during AC repair.
5.Pipe wrenches and Pliers
Having a set of pipe wrenches helps you with repairing any kinds of AC units. They are used to tighten bolts and nuts. Air conditioner unit connections and fittings are usually made of copper or brass. So, they need appropriate wrenches to turn. Also having different types of pliers like needle nose pliers, locking pliers, slip joint pliers and wire strippers are necessary for AC repair.
6.Multimeter
Safety is the most important thing in any repair job and since AC units are directly related to electrical systems, repairmen should access some tools to assess electric current in wires and measure voltage and resistance.
Multimeter is an electronic device that can do several jobs at the same time. A typical multimeter can measure voltage, resistance and current. Multimeters are in two types: analog and digital and are used for various operations from simple tests like measuring a battery voltage to diagnosing errors in complicated devices.
Warning: never use multimeter in damp places.
7.Hack saw
This kind of saw is used for cutting copper tubes during AC repair. It is also used to cut different kinds of metals. The blade can be changed according to the metal type. Although the saw is specifically used for cutting metal, but it is also used to cut other materials like plastic tubes or wood plates.
Warning: make sure to use a suitable blade for different surfaces in order not to hurt yourself or the tool.
Note: inserting too much pressure when using the saw will break its blade.
8.Pcychometer
This tool is used to measure the air humidity. It is done by comparing the temperature between a dry-bulb thermometer and a wet-bulb thermometer. The temperature difference between these two depends on the humidity.
Note: make sure to touch the tool with clean hands. Any pollution or oil or even the warmth of your hand can result in a faulty measurement.
8.Thermometer
This is a necessary tool for AC repair and is used for measuring the temperature. There is a special kind of thermometer for AC repair in order to measure the temperature of the air, water, refrigerant and the copper tubes.
9.Leak detector
There are several ways to find the refrigerant leak during AC repair. Using an electronic leak detector is one of the easiest ways. This tool uses electric current to find the leak. The current decrease shows the leaking.
The tools we introduced here are the common tools needed for AC repair. If you want to know more expert tools, you can watch air conditioner instructional video in HelloTechnic website.
